Functional Medicine for Anxiety Training
LEARN HOW TO ADDRESS THE UNDERLYING IMBALANCES OF ANXIETY
Join Peter Bongiorno, ND for an in-depth integrative psychiatric training examining the underlying physiology of anxiety disorders. The Functional Medicine for Anxiety Training is designed for providers who are ready to go beyond traditional psychiatry and learn to treat anxiety with holistic and natural interventions.
Anxiety is the most common mental health challenge, with about 30% of people experiencing it at some point in their lifetime. Anxiety has multiple causes that are different for each person. While medications can clearly help symptoms, they can be addictive and patients can become too tolerant. About 35% of patients with suspected histamine intolerance have underlying anxiety, and 16% of patients with mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) demonstrated anxiety.
This training examines how anxiety is influenced by multiple factors of environment, lifestyle, genetics, and more, including mast cell activation and elevated histamine levels. Instead of viewing anxiety purely as a psychological issue, we can now identify the genuine biological drivers behind psychiatric symptoms, including panic and anxiety disorders. Recognizing this connection empowers us and our patients to address the root causes directly, leading to more effective and lasting treatment.
PROGRAM START & TRAINING DATES: The training begins April 9, 2026. Live sessions are scheduled for April 9, 16, and 23.
THIS INTENSIVE TRAINING IS IDEAL FOR: Mental health providers such as psychiatrists, nurses and nurse practitioners, physicians (NDs, MDs, DOs), therapists, psychologists, pediatricians, physician assistants, and other mental health clinicians
PROGRAM FORMAT: Self-paced curriculum with three (3) live, online sessions providing live faculty guidance and trainee Q&A time (available as recordings for those unable to attend)
PROGRAM LENGTH: 3 weeks to complete and 6 months access to training material
ACCREDITATION: 4.0 credits (CME, CPE, CNE, AAPA, AANP, CPE for Dietitians, ASWB, APA, Participation)
ENROLLMENT FEE: $499 Only $399!
“I’m thrilled to share this training because it represents a fundamental shift in how we understand and treat anxiety. For too long, we’ve been limited by viewing anxiety through a single lens, but the science now shows us that biological factors—from mast cell activation to histamine dysregulation—can be the actual drivers behind our patients’ symptoms. If you’re ready to help your patients achieve deeper, more lasting relief, this is the training you’ve been waiting for.”

What You’ll Learn in this Training
In Parts 1 and 2 of this training, Dr. Peter Bongiorno will discuss the neurotransmitters involved in anxiety, with a focus on GABA. He will then review the underlying physiology of anxiety and factors like blood sugar dysregulation, endocrine, genetics, inflammation, digestive imbalances and more. He will also discuss lifestyle and diet factors that can keep the anxiety response going. Additionally, he will review lab tests that can help find underlying imbalance, and finally, review natural treatment solutions.
In Part 3 of this training, Dr. Bongiorno will discuss how histamine and its receptors interplay with genomics, methylation, neurotransmitters, and hormones. He will clarify the connection between these processes and MCAS and highlight which lab tests and clinical signs indicate histamine or MCAS imbalances.
Upon completion of this training course, registrants will be able to:
- Explain the multi-factorial physiology behind anxiety\
- Identify which lab tests are most valuable for finding the underlying causes of anxiety
- Discuss lifestyle, dietary, and supplement support that may help balance anxiety
- Describe the histamine molecule and histamine receptors
- Identify genetic SNPs that are valuable in the diagnosis of anxiety, histamine imbalance, and MCAS
Clinical Mentoring & Support
Get direct faculty mentorship and clinical guidance during three (3) live, hands-on sessions conducted by Psychiatry Redefined faculty, Peter Bongiorno, ND. Each online session is led with practical application in mind, focusing on clinical skills and concepts that can be immediately implemented with your patients. These sessions begin with a short presentation by faculty, and then allow for collaborative case discussions with faculty and peers, where you can exchange clinical insights and navigate challenging, real-world cases. Attendance is encouraged but not required for live sessions, and all sessions are recorded for later viewing.
