The Choice Between Easy or Personalized Mental Healthcare

In mental healthcare, personalized, root cause treatment beats ‘easy’ every time.

Dear Colleagues,

Our general mental health field often relies on standard prescriptions and one-size-fits-all treatment, missing the opportunity to truly understand each patient’s unique story, biochemistry, genetics, and lifestyle. But effective mental healthcare requires more than this—it demands a commitment to finding underlying causes, crafting individualized treatment plans, and investing the time to do what’s best for each patient.

At Psychiatry Redefined, we believe that every patient deserves the same care and thoughtful approach that we would want for our family members.

The traditional approach is to prescribe medication as the solution for a specific diagnosis, tell the patient to try it for a few weeks, and then reassess. If the symptoms persist, another medication is added to the mix. It’s a straightforward method that allows you to see more patients daily. But let’s be honest—this is the easier road to mental healthcare.

However, ‘easy’ and ‘what’s right’ differ greatly.

If it were your loved one, would you choose a one-size-fits-all approach? Or would you prefer a clinician who takes the time to understand your loved one’s unique history, genetics, lifestyle, and biological factors?

Imagine taking a loved one to the ER for a stomach ache, only for them to recommend surgery without any tests. It’s unthinkable. Yet, this is often how mental healthcare is approached today.

We need to shift this mindset. Thoughtful, comprehensive care that identifies the root cause and creates a personalized treatment plan is what every patient deserves. After 30 years of practicing and researching functional medicine, I founded Psychiatry Redefined with this mission in mind. Watching my patients truly recover through root-case analysis, testing and treatment, drives me to continue creating educational programs for clinicians.

My goal is to ensure that every patient has the opportunity for lasting recovery, not just symptom management. Isn’t that what we all want for our loved ones and ourselves?

Yet, many clinicians don’t seek to resolve anxiety, depression, or ADHD. Instead, they aim to manage these conditions and symptoms, perhaps without realizing that more effective care is possible. Yes; a deeper, more complex approach takes more time and effort, but it’s the key to true recovery. Learning functional psychiatry skills not only transforms your career, but drastically changes patient lives.

Functional medicine for mental health is the best way forward. It’s not the easy path. If it were, everyone would be doing it. But it is the right oath. And together, as more clinicians engage in this root-cause work, everyone benefits.

Thank you for being part of this mission to transform mental healthcare. It’s worth the effort and time because every patient deserves personalized care. It’s what we’d want for ourselves and our loved ones.
