Addressing the Pediatric Mental Health Crisis

Finally, a Functional Psychiatry training that puts our children first.

The truth is hard to ignore—our children are in crisis.

Nearly 1 in 5 children in the U.S. are struggling with a mental, emotional, developmental, or behavioral disorder. Suicide behaviors among teens surged by over 40% before the pandemic even began. And since 2020, emergency room visits for mental health issues in children have skyrocketed—up 24% for kids ages 5 to 11, and 31% for teens. In 2022, the American Academy of Pediatrics declared what many of us have seen coming for years: a national emergency in children’s mental health.

And yet… the system continues to fail our children.

Too often, young patients are caught in a revolving door of quick diagnoses, over-prescribing, and trial-and-error treatment plans that ignore the individual behind the symptoms. A child’s suffering is not a diagnostic checklist. It’s a call to look deeper, to uncover what’s truly driving the distress beneath the surface.

After 35 years of clinical practice, and countless hours consulting on complex pediatric cases, I can tell you: there is a better way. When we pause, assess the whole child, and apply evidence-based functional and integrative medicine approaches, something remarkable happens. We uncover root causes. We simplify treatment. We help children heal—and we restore hope to families who thought it was lost.

That’s why I’m proud to share something I believe is a turning point for our field—and for our future.

Together with Dr. Nancy O’Hara and an extraordinary team of faculty, I’ve spent the past year developing a program that’s long overdue: Psychiatry Redefined’s Certified Pediatric Functional & Integrative Psychiatry Fellowship—a comprehensive, one-year training experience designed exclusively for clinicians who serve children, adolescents, and teens.

This is not a repurposed adult curriculum. This is a first-of-its-kind program dedicated to the unique mental health needs of young patients—rooted in science, guided by clinical experience, and built to change lives.

Over twelve months, we’ll dive into critical areas of pediatric care, including anxiety and mood disorders, ADHD, and neurodiversity, suicide prevention, genetic testing, nutritional psychiatry, the gut-brain connection, PANS/PANDAS, eating disorders, mold and Lyme, and much more. You’ll gain practical tools and protocols you won’t find in any traditional training: everything from folate receptor antibody testing and nutritional lithium, to herbal therapies, deprescribing strategies, and personalized prescribing supervision.

This program raises the bar for pediatric mental health training—and raises our collective capacity to offer children the care they truly deserve.

If you’re ready to help lead this shift in pediatric psychiatry, I invite you to join us. Schedule a 1:1 call to explore whether this Fellowship is the right fit for your practice and your purpose.

Our children cannot wait. Let’s give them a better path forward—together.
