Functional Medicine for Binge Eating Disorder Course Breakdown

This two-module course introduces Dr. Greenblatt’s breakthrough New Hope Model for BED patients, as outlined in his bestselling book, Integrative Medicine for Binge Eating. This New Hope Model serves as the cornerstone for this training, and teaches you how to identify imbalances in the brain, assess and treat via lab testing, and correct deficiencies and excesses through nutritional supplementation and augmentation. You’ll learn how the gut-brain connection and microbiome influence eating behaviors, along with how and what medications fit into treatment for each patient.

Module 1: BED Overview & Neurochemistry, Amino Acids, Regulation and Food Addiction

In the first module, you’ll gain a comprehensive overview of BED diganostic criteria, epidemiology and key features of BED. Dr. Greenblatt will then dive into the chemical underpinnings of appetite, neurotransmitter regulation, and how this affects hunger and satiety signaling. The majority of the module will cover amino acids and the significant interplay between these and neurotransmission. You’ll learn common causes of amino acid deficiencies, the nutrients necessary for digestion and regulation, the complexities of amino acid absorption and depletion, and nutritional strategies for addressing imbalances. Finally, Dr. Greenblatt will cover the neural correlation between processed foods, like sugar and MSG, as they relate to food addiction.

Module 2: Nutritional Supplementation, the Gut-Brain Axis, Medications & Personalized Treatment

In module 2, Dr. Greenblatt examines opiate neuropeptides, their impact on cognition and behavior, and targeted lab testing. This module will then explore the role of vitamins and minerals in-depth—specifically, B vitamins, Vitamin D and Magnesium—and their role in energy metabolism, enzyme function, nutrient absorption, neurotransmitter synthesis, and inflammation. He provides clinical pearls for resolving imbalances and deficiencies, along with treatment implications and recommended formulations. The nuances of the gut-brain axis, microbiome, and dysbiosis will be examined as they pertain to appetite and behavior. Dr. Greenblatt will conclude the module with a helpful review of key medications for BED and how they fit into the treatment toolbox, along with a comprehensive review of the New Hope Model, how to personalize patient treatment, and additional therapies to support the body-mind connection with your patients.
