Course Description

Course Fee: $340
CME Credits: 5.0

In this four-module course for clinicians of all specialties, Dr. Greenblatt makes the case for a functional and integrative medical approach to anxiety that moves away from traditional symptom classification and polypharmaceutical approaches to anxiety disorders. Protocols for patient testing are offered alongside specific nutritional interventions to address anxiogenic physiology, as well as other integrative treatments—exercise, yoga, and herbal supplements—that will enable you to maximize therapeutic interventions for your patients.

Modules

1. Anxiety Redefined

We begin by examining current DSM classifications and pharmacological interventions in the treatment of anxiety. Dr. Greenblatt then shifts to a discussion of “THE ZEEBRA” method, which is his acronym for a comprehensive evaluation of all the factors that lead to affective disorders. The final section is devoted to key nutrients associated with the symptoms of anxiety—magnesium, vitamin B3, and vitamin B12—and lab testing protocols and supplementation for its treatment.

2. Exploring Etiology in Anxiety and OCD

Module 2 commences with one of the fastest-growing areas of research in functional psychiatry: the gut-mind connection. For our purposes, we examine gut dysbiosis and Clostridia overgrowth, and the current probiotic therapies in the treatment of anxiety. Next, we look at misdiagnoses of OCD disorder, and how amino acid depletion fits with an orthomolecular model of anxiety.

3. Enhancing Neurotransmission, Eliminating Inflammation

Module 3 explores the contributing factors of folate deficiency, opioid peptides (derived from wheat and dairy), systemic inflammation, and vitamin D deficiency in the presentation of anxiety symptoms. We will also take a close look at inositol as a mechanism for serotonergic signaling.

4. Expanding the Therapeutic Arsenal

The final module provides functional and integrative medicine treatments for anxiety, including N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC), nutritional lithium, I-theanine, GABA, ashwagandha, cannabidiol, along with “vitamin E” (exercise) and “vitamin Y” (yoga).

This is a comprehensive review of how to start integrating functional medicine principles into your practice for the treatment of anxiety. Dr. Greenblatt explains how to implement these treatments and what tests to order and review prior to supplementing which is key. He gives many clinical examples and protocols that you can start implementing with your patients today!
