Introduction to Functional Psychiatry for Depression & Mood Disorders Curriculum

Functional & Integrative Medicine for Bipolar Disorder

This 3-module course illuminates a cutting-edge functional medicine paradigm for the treatment of one of psychiatry’s most challenging presentations. Discover an evidence-based approach comprising multiple treatment tiers, such as medication, testing-informed nutritional interventions, and natural therapies. Pharmaceuticals and maintenance will be reviewed in detail, along with functional interventions to address genetics, intrinsic imbalances, neurochemical signaling, and optimal affective regulation.

Functional & Integrative Medicine for Depression

Over four modules, clinicians of all specialties will become adept in identifying and assessing the biologic abnormalities—nutritional, genetic, metabolic, and environmental factors—that underlie the diagnosis of depression in numerous patients. Employing a model of functional medicine, you will learn the diagnostic tests you should be running on patients, the role key nutrients play in maintaining neurologic health, and biologic treatment protocols that can be easily incorporated into your practice.

Biological Models for Suicide Prevention

Developed in collaboration with the International Society for Orthomolecular Medicine, this course explores the underlying biochemical, nutritional, genetic, and environmental factors that lead to a diagnosis of suicidality. Research illustrating the benefits of nutritional supplementation to mitigate risk factors will be presented, along with evidence-based interventions and a biochemical and individualized treatment approach.

Nutritional Psychiatry for Borderline Personality Disorder

An exclusive online seminar

In these four exclusive seminar presentations from experts, Dr. James Greenblatt and Dr. Leslie Korn, you’ll learn how to incorporate evidence-based strategies for testing and nutritional therapeutics into practice to help improve outcomes for your patients with BPD. More specifically, Dr. Greenblatt examines supplementation and nutritional interventions to stabilize mood, reduce agitation and irritability, mitigate suicidality, and optimize brain and neurotransmitter production. Dr. Korn explores the current diagnostic category, and presents an integrative approach based on dietary and nutritional supplementation, herbal medicine, somatic therapies, enhancing interpersonal rapport, and self-care adherence.

Optimizing Sleep as an Antidote for Trauma: Exploring an Underutilized Treatment Opportunity

Insomnia and sleep disorders are predominant in those with PTSD, and eating and mood disorders. This course by Ralph Carson, LD, RD, PhD, will provide an unlikely and underutilized treatment for trauma/PTSD and expound on the sleep dysregulation that trauma generates, covering exposure response prevention (ERP), relaxation therapy (ERRT), cognitive behavioral treatment for insomnia (CBT-I), pharmacological therapy, and much more.

An Integrative Approach to Perinatal Depression & Anxiety

An exclusive conference lecture

Both pregnancy and postpartum are periods in women’s reproductive life that do not protect them from new onset or exacerbation of previously existing depression and/or anxiety disorder. The postpartum period is especially vulnerable. Several risk factors and etiologies have been proposed as contributing factors for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMAD) such as sociocultural, endocrine and psychoimmunological changes, hormonal dysregulation, as well as nutrition, and neurotransmitters. In this presentation from our popular Well Woman Conference, Dr. Vesna Pirec discusses how crucial it is to appropriately screen and diagnose PMAD and provide adequate comprehensive treatment.

Elevate Your Learning with Live and Targeted Supervisions

Gain valuable clinical guidance from the preeminent expert in functional medicine and nutritional psychiatry. Join Dr. Greenblatt for four (4) dedicated live supervisions covering specific macro- and micro-nutrient deficiencies, specifically as they relate to depression and mood disorders. Assessment, testing, therapeutic, and repletion strategies will be covered in-depth, and students will have ample time to ask questions, discuss real cases and treatment plans, and gain insight on how to apply functional approaches.

Fall 2023 Supervisions & Schedule

Live group supervisions are held at 8:00 pm EST twice-monthly on Mondays, and begin on October 23, 2023. All supervisions are recorded for later viewing.

Macronutrient Deficiencies: Amino Acids, Cholesterol, EFAs
October 23, 2023

This supervision will explore the significance of amino acids, cholesterol, and essential fatty acid deficiencies as pertain to the pathogenesis and etiology of affective disorders. Dr. Greenblatt will delve into the mechanisms through which these vital nutrients support brain function, digestion, cell membrane health, and enzyme activity, as well as both physiologic and neuropsychiatric implications of deficiency states.

Strategies for biomedical testing will be presented, along with evidence-based recommendations for targeted supplementation to support an integrated, personalized regimen. Trainees will come away with bench-to-beside knowledge that can be applied in practice immediately, to support the lasting recovery of patients struggling with depression, dysthymia, anxiety, and other affective disorders.

Micronutrient Deficiencies: Vitamins B12, B9 & D
October 30, 2023

This supervision examines essential vitamins that are not only vital for sustained optimal brain function but are also robustly associated with psychiatric disorders. Focusing specifically on B12, Folate (B9), and D, Dr. Greenblatt will explore key biologic roles of each vitamin, and how those roles support the health and maintenance of balanced brain and nervous system function. Research corroborating robust associations between deficiencies of these nutrients and psychiatric illness will be presented, as a segue to in-depth discussion on the various health implications of Vitamin B12, Folate, and Vitamin D deficiencies, respectively. Evidence-based strategies for testing and nutritional repletion / rebalancing will also be presented, expanding clinicians’ therapeutic toolboxes for the treatment of affective disorders.

Micronutrient Deficiencies: Magnesium, Zinc, Lithium
November 6, 2023

This module will focus on three of the most important minerals required by the human body for sustained physiologic and neurologic function: magnesium, zinc, and lithium. It will explore the role of each mineral in turn, focusing on biologic mechanisms supporting HPA Axis homeostasis, digestion, neurotransmitter synthesis, neurotransmitter modulation, and neuroprotection. Dr. Greenblatt will also review each mineral deficiency alongside discrete endogenous and environmental factors that can potentially contribute to a deficiency state, and disruptions that may contribute to the emergence of psychiatric illness.

Strategies for the objective assessment of a patient’s magnesium, zinc, and/or lithium status – spanning standard laboratory assessments and clinical indicators – will be presented, along with evidence-based guidelines for supplementation to support recovery.

Redefine Your Clinical Practice: Exploring the Challenges & Benefits of Functional and Integrative Medicine
November 13, 2023

A growing number of clinicians are turning to functional and integrative medicine, frustrated by the limitations of the “one size fits all” model of traditional psychiatry. Utilizing new approaches can improve patient outcomes and provide a new therapeutic arsenal for providers. However, while access to functional medicine training has expanded recently, there remain significant obstacles in the translation to real-life clinical practice – bias from colleagues, patient doubt, hesitancy from insurance companies, the complexities of implementation, and more.

In this final supervision, join Drs. James Greenblatt, Catrina Luca and Mariela Podolski as they tackle these challenges head-on with three separate discussions. Each will explore unique institutional, cultural, and socioeconomic factors contributing to the difficulties providers encounter in pursuing functional and integrative medicine. They will engage in open-minded discussion about strategies for navigating logistical, professional, and interpersonal obstacles in establishing a functional medicine practice – and conclude with an examination of the various clinical and career benefits associated with implementing a personalized mental health care approach in practice.
