Dopamine is a neurotransmitter with profound etiological and therapeutic importance in emotional, behavioral and neurocognitive health. A variety of plant-derived phenolic compounds enhance dopaminergic transmission by augmenting biosynthesis, reducing degradation, or improving synaptic function through metabolic, endocrine or immunological mechanisms. This lecture will assess the current arsenal of dopamine-modulating phenolic compounds in dietary and medicinal plants, with a special emphasis on relative potency and bioavailability.
