What You’ll Learn

Ready to improve patient care with groundbreaking strategies in integrative psychiatry and functional medicine? Read on to learn about the courses in the Fundamentals Intensive online training.

Intro to

Functional & Integrative Psychiatry

In this preparatory course, Dr. Greenblatt introduces the key tenets of functional medicine as they apply to mental illness, and examines the risks, potential side-effects, and benefits of nutritional supplementation aligned with a systems biology model. He explores how functional psychiatry offers actionable clinical solutions by addressing the underlying biochemical, genetic, and metabolic imbalances that contribute to pathology. Finally, he discusses how this approach presents today’s clinicians with a path to the standard of care we all deserve – a path illuminated by science and upheld by the mandates of conscientious, personalized medicine.

Functional Medicine for

ADHD

This three-module course, Dr. Greenblatt introduces his breakthrough Plus/Minus treatment plan for ADHD patients, while also providing a comprehensive overview of the biochemistry that contributes to this disorder. Treatment strategies such as specific nutrient deficiencies will be discussed in-depth as a supplement or alternative to medication.

Functional Medicine for

Addiction

This 7-module course, co-taught by Dr. James Greenblatt and Dr. Arwen Podesta, elucidates a comprehensive functional medicine approach to the treatment of substance use disorders, targeting reward-pathway dysregulation and the many nutritional deficiencies associated with addiction that can alter brain function. Integrating mainstream approaches such as MAT and psychotherapy with evidence-based functional approaches such as nutrient therapy, acupuncture, and mindfulness, this course provides clinicians with a roadmap for navigating addiction disorders and bringing patients into balance.

Functional Medicine for

Anxiety

In this four-module course for clinicians of all specialties, Dr. Greenblatt makes the case for a functional and integrative medical approach to anxiety that moves away from traditional symptom classification and polypharmaceutical approaches to anxiety disorders. Protocols for patient testing are offered alongside specific nutritional interventions to address anxiogenic physiology, as well as other integrative treatments—exercise, yoga, and herbal supplements—that will enable you to maximize therapeutic interventions for your patients.

5.0 CME Credits (View course and CME details)

Functional Medicine for

Depression

Over four modules, Dr. Greenblatt will help clinicians of all specialties become adept in identifying and assessing the biologic abnormalities—nutritional, genetic, metabolic, and environmental factors—that underlie the diagnosis of depression in numerous patients. Employing a model of functional medicine, you will learn the diagnostic tests you should be running on patients, the role key nutrients play in maintaining neurologic health, and biologic treatment protocols that can be easily incorporated into your practice.

Low Dose Nutritional Lithium

Taught by Dr. James Greenblatt, this two-part course looks at low-dose nutritional lithium as an effective and safe solution for a range of psychiatric and neurologic disorders. Dr. Greenblatt will explore testing, patient-specific dosage ranges, and recommendations for the incorporation of lithium testing, with an emphasis on the diagnostic and treatment implications of irritability. He will also provide cutting-edge research in low-dose, pharmaceutical lithium for these diagnoses, as well as neurodegenerative illnesses, such as Lyme disease and ALS.

Functional Medicine for

Managing Medication Side Effects

In this course, Dr. Greenblatt provides methods for managing medication withdrawal and side-effects (sexual dysfunction, weight gain, suicidality) through a lens of functional and integrative medicine. In particular, it will examine nutritional interventions to ameliorate the withdrawal symptoms associated with SSRI antidepressants, and conclude with a general discussion regarding the role of medication in psychiatry.

Adaptogens in Psychiatry

In this unique course, led by naturopathic physician Peter Bongiorno, ND, LAc, you’ll examine the long history of plant adaptogens (natural plant materials with a variety of pharmacologic compounds) in the treatment of psychiatric illness. Based on millennial-old knowledge regarding the medicinal qualities of particular adaptogens, this course provides clinical guidelines for supplementation regimens based on patients’ diagnostic profiles.

Hormones & Mental Health

In this course led by Peter Bongiorno, ND, LAc, you’ll learn how hormones affect mental health, neurotransmitter balance and stress response, the role of hormonal individuality, and how different hormone scenarios can be balanced and treated using naturopathic and functional medicine.

Intro to Functional Medicine

Lab Testing in Psychiatry

In this course Dr. James Greenblatt shines a spotlight on biomedical analysis in today’s functional medicine practice. He discusses foundational lab tests of a functional medicine practice, highlights critical nutrients and biologic imbalances often implicated in psychiatric illness, provides guidelines for test ordering, and offers clinical pearls for results interpretation.

Basics & Biochemistry: The Organic Acids Test

In this course presented by Jessica Perley ARNP, FNP-C, you’ll explore the OAT test, application in individualized medicine, how bio-individuality underlays practical application of biomedical testing, & discover what enzymatic pathways are involved with OAT measurements.

Hair Mineral Analysis: The Basics of Interpretation

Presented by Jessica Perley ARNP, FNP-C, this course will help you understand how to differentiate heavy metals, essential elements and common patterns in hair analysis that are associated with psychiatric disorders.

Lab Testing: Genetics

Presented by William Shaw, PhD, the founder of Great Plains Laboratory and a board-certified clinical chemist and toxicologist, this course will bridge symptomatic presentation and genetic variability by exploring single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that have been identified as influential in psychiatric susceptibility and pathogenesis, and examine how information gleaned from pharmacogenetic testing can be utilized to steer the course of individually-tailored treatment.

Lab Testing: Heavy Metals

Presented by William Shaw, PhD, this course will examine the growing threat to human health posed by environmental pollution, the physiologic and neurologic sequelae of toxic metal exposure, and the options currently available to practitioners for the testing and quantification of toxic metal burden.

Lab Testing: Mycotoxins

Presented by William Shaw, PhD, this course offers an in-depth look at the physical and neurologic ramifications of exposure to toxic fungal metabolites, and the variety of laboratory tests now available to clinicians for mycotoxin screening.

Lab Testing: Organic Acids

Presented by William Shaw, PhD, this course will explore biologic factors that can precipitate disruptions of intermediary metabolism, the pathologic ramifications of organic acidemia, and the clinical utility of organic acid testing in integrative functional medicine practice.
